Artists Statement

The act of making is an ongoing search for understanding, an exploration of my self, the material, and the world around me. This dialogue is created as I work to explore forces and energy through figure, form, and surface. As I draw from these inspirations I find myself questioning what it means to be me, then exploring this open ended question through making. My work exists to ask the question who am I, who are you, and who are we.

Experience

I began my time in undergrad wandering, not at all committed to being a studio art major, distracted by life’s new freedom. After my freshman year I met someone who allowed and encouraged growth in the parts of myself that allow me to be an artist. I enrolled to take ceramics my next semester after meeting her and seeing the work she had made in high school, I was quite infatuated and enamored.

While taking class abroad in Florence, Italy at Instituto Lorenzo De Medici I studied under two of the greatest teachers I’ve ever had. Spending countless hours in the studio trying to soak in their love and seemingly infinite knowledge of ceramics. Around the end of that semester I realized that at some point during my time in Florence I had decided that ceramics was something I would continue with for the rest of my life.

Upon returning home I have spent time studying in several college studios; my soon to be alma mater Concordia college in Moorhead, Minnesota State University Moorhead, and North Dakota State University. I’ve developed life long connections through all three studios, rediscovering my love for photography at Concordia under a loving and fun professor. Having recently finished work for my BFA show, I plan to continue my career this summer at NDSU while showing work at Gallery4 in downtown Fargo and also here, on my website.
